We bend the rules and allow for kingdoms not to be in a grid. This allows some interesting shapes and helps the youngest (8) feel better able to play. 12 yr old and parents can be ruthless.

It incorporates patterns, multiplication, and strategy, and with several variations on the rules, this works well for two players, and adds different objectives to games with more players.
